First the Thunder, Now Brace for Wind & Snow

We had some pretty impressive cloud to ground lightning strikes here in Lafayette on Saturday night, but no severe weather reported in the area. I spoke to at least two families traveling back to Lafayette last night and we are lucky compared to what they are going through. They are talking about sheets of rain and really nasty wind. You can see the classic spring storm taking up much of the country above. On Saturday there were close to 100 damage reports including seven tornadoes. I am glad they decided to wait until today to finish their trip back to the Hoosier state. But I did tell them they will need their winter coats. My brother-in-law Rob reported sleet and snow in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and they went over to a heavy, wet snow with thunder in the area. It will be interesting to see some of his pictures and weather reports from that area today! My Mom and Dad have verified thunderstorms and heavy rain in North Florida which is good news for the drought in that area. This active pattern looks like it is here to stay all across the country with two more blockbuster storms on the way next week. The Wabash River is cresting below flood stage on Monday at close to 9 feet but it needs to be watched more carefully next weekend.

We will take it a day at a time and today will feel and look more like January with some brief dustings possible around the area along with 40 mph wind gusts. I expect temperatures to remain above freezing and with the warm ground that should keep most accumulations under an inch. But far northern and western Indiana could still see an inch or two before all is said and done. I have the latest snowfall forecast for you above! Have a great day and may everybody stay safe and get to their destination safely today.
