My favorite thing about my job

October 8th, 2009 at 3:42 pm by Matt Wettersten under Sports 18

I like a lot of things about my job, but I think my favorite is traveling to cover games. It’s a challenge. It also puts you in an unfamiliar situation/city and you have to troubleshoot equipment at times. However, when it makes the air it looks good and I get great satisfaction from covering Purdue on the road. It’s about 8 hours to Minnesota. I’m making the road trip, we should have a report on Saturday.

CC falls out of first place in Class A coaches football poll

October 5th, 2009 at 10:36 pm by Matt Wettersten under Sports 18

According to this week’s Indiana Football Coaches Association Poll, Central Catholic has lost the top spot to Pioneer.  Pioneer moves into the number one spot.  Both teams received 5 first place votes, but Pioneer got 2 more total points than CC to move them into first.  I have two thoughts.  First, it’s just a poll and it doesn’t really matter that much, but I am personally surprised.  I am not saying I don’t think Pioneer is good.  I think Pioneer is a tremendous football team and Bryce Kiser may be the best player in our area, but what has CC done to knock them out of the top spot?  They’ve essentially ‘blown out’ every opponent.  I’m not saying Pioneer isn’t worthy of #1, but has CC done enough to move themselves out of the number one spot?  I mean, they gave up their first touchdown of the season last week.

The answer:  This discussion will be resolved in Sectionals.

One final note:  The Associated Press has Central Catholic first again this week.

West Lafayette beats McCutcheon

September 14th, 2009 at 8:42 pm by Matt Wettersten under Sports 18

West Side was impressive tonight in their 9-1 win over McCutcheon.  West Lafayette lost in Sectionals last year and they appear to be on a mission to make it as far as they can this year.  They certainly have the talent to do it.

Golfing with Fuzzy and Daly

September 9th, 2009 at 12:46 pm by Matt Wettersten under Sports 18

Can I say first of all that these guys are hilarious.  Between their jokes and commentary, whenever they spoke everyone was laughing.   We all had a great time golfing and team WLFI shot a respectable 9 under.  16 under won.  But, the real winners are the the children at the YMCA.  On the scond hole you can donate 20 dollars to the YMCA and tee off from the women’s tees.  The catch was you had to wear a skirt.  We did it all in good fun, but for the sake of all of us in our group, hopefully these pictures don’t get out.   (I hope you’re laughing out loud)

Thoughts after week two of the Frenzy

August 30th, 2009 at 10:03 pm by Matt Wettersten under Sports 18

1.  CC reassures how good they are.  Enough said?  This team is on a mission this year.

2. Pioneer could be on their way.  What an impressive shut out win over Winamac.  Could we really see the South Newton/Pioneer match-up coming up in week three, be potentially for the conference championship?  Did I also mention Sectional 34 has these two teams and CC this year?

3. West side guts out a win, but Cass is really good too.  The Kings will be back.  Even in defeat they proved how good they still are.  West side pulled out the win, but it wasn’t as impressive as week one.

4. Harrison plays like the team we thought they were.  Not to make excuses for Jeff, but when you have the types of injuries they have, it is tough to overcome.

5. I’m keeping my eyes on North Montgomery.  They lost some players from last year, they returned some good players.  Can they repeat last season’s great year?
