Thunder Sleet Reported In Benton County….Thunder & Icy Mix Newton County

February 17th, 2014 at 1:15 pm by under Chad's WLFI Weather Blog

Heavy sleet with thunder has been reported near Boswell & Oxford.  Heavy sleet, freezing rain & snow reported near Kentland with thunder.

1″ per hour snowfall rates reported from Newton & Jasper counties.

It is mostly sleet & some freezing rain here at West Lafayette now with a few large snow flakes at times.

Measured 0.1″ of sleet & snow.  Freezing rain accumulation is trace.

Given this plume of warm, juicy air aloft “trying” to warm us up, I would not even rule out graupal or pea hail with any thunder sleet/freezing rain/snow.

Southeast winds at 10-25 mph are also creating issues with any snow/sleet blowing around & coming down in sheets.

You are right Mary Anne, there is ice in the snow now. Visability is much improved, tho, so that is a good thing. Am sure the bus drivers would rather deal with ice than whiteouts.
