Illini Mushrooms Bring Big Smiles

My wife Sue grew up outside of Peoria, Illinois near a little town called Glasford.  We still make frequent visits to her family farm, which offers great scenery with big hills, two creeks, and rewarding mushroom hunting.

This past weekend we made the trip across I-74 to visit her family and hit the woods.  Despite missing out on the “Mother Load” we have found in recent years in one area of the property (her brother Rich from Texas beat us to it) there were still sponges to be found.

My step-son Brett, Sue, my sister-in law Linda, brother-in-law Rich, and I combed the hills, woods, creek bottoms, and valleys looking for the new “honey hole.”  A hillside we were mostly climbing to return to my sister-in-law’s house turned into that honey hole, revealing an impressive patch of yellow sponges.

We were finding doubles, triples, and even a quadruple bunch of very nice and very fresh morels.    We found several up until that point and had a lot of fun doing so, but this definitely made the day, as Brett’s smile can attest to.

And considering the way the weather has been this year, many people probably have similar stories and hopefully the same great memories.

See you out and about.

    Tom,

You fit in well with the family. Seperating you from a morel is like seperating a mother bear from her cub.

For those still looking, most of the finds seem to be along fence lines with a dead elm or groups of dead elms on drier ground.

    I’ll take that as a compliment R.M.
Hope to see you again soon, although we’ll have to find something else to pass the time until the mushrooms come back next spring.
I hope you had a safe trip back to Dallas.
