Frost Advisory for Some Counties Tonight……

September 30th, 2009 at 6:53 pm by Chad Evans under Chad's WLFI Weather Blog

Frost Advisory for Cass, Miami, Pulaski & Fulton counties tonight.  Here, more widespread frost is likely, so cover very sensitive plants, or bring them in.

Even though there is technically no frost advisory for northern Jasper or Newton counties, I would still heed the potential of more widespread frost there.

For the rest of the area, a few patches of frost are possible, but no sensitive plant damage is expected.

Storms, Strong Winds, Coldest Air of the Season…..

September 27th, 2009 at 9:14 pm by Chad Evans under Chad's WLFI Weather Blog

****NEW****………….Tornado Watch Benton, Jasper, Newton counties until 3 a.m. Eastern Time.

Storms have been slow to form (later than model guidance).  So, I have moved the threat up 10 p.m.-4 a.m.

The very strong cold front, deep trough, powerful wind dynamics aloft & cold air aloft is forming the storms.  There is a lack of instability, however.

Boy, if this same set-up were to occur with 85-degree temperatures, dew points of 70 with peak sun in late afternoon…………this would be a major severe weather…….even tornado outbreak.

ww0745_radar

Strong cold front is approaching & at least a broken squall line is in the process of  forming in northern & central Illinois.

This line may have pockets of damaging straight-line winds with it.

WINDY MONDAY!

The yellows across our area indicate gusts of 35-40 knots or 40-45 mph for Monday.

Our far northern areas could have gusts up to 48 mph a few times during the day.

After highs of only 59-63 Monday, lows of 35-42 degrees are likely Tuesday night-early Wednesday morning as winds diminish.  (See below)

A strong, deep autumn storm will pivot through the central & northern Plains next week.

These robust, rather spring-like systems wrapping up in the Plains & Midwest are common in our third severe season of the year (October-November).

This system will likely bring a widespread severe weather outbreak to the Plains with some tornadoes possible.  At the present time, it is unclear as to whether it will bring severe storms to the WLFI viewing area.  This bears close watching, however.

It will bring windy, warm weather………….then windy & much cooler weather behind.

Storms, Wind & Patchy Frost as Fall Regime Arrives……

September 27th, 2009 at 12:59 pm by Chad Evans under Chad's WLFI Weather Blog

Very strong cold front will pass tonight.  A narrow squall line of showers/storms is possible along it with pockets of damaging wind.

This bears watching………….lack of widespread instability will prevent this from becoming a widespread, damaging derecho event.

However, the strength of the front & trough coupled with very strong November wind dynamics will promote the organization of at least a narrow, broken squall line.

The preliminary time of passage through the WLFI viewing area is somewhere between 9 p.m. & 2 a.m.

Strong winds will arrive behind the front with gusts as high as 40-45 mph overnight & tomorrow with the coldest temperatures of the season!

Patchy frost will be possible north & northeast of Lafayette Tuesday night-Wednesday morning.

ABOVE:  Scattered showers/storms are pulling away………….

BELOW:  Sunday looks blustery & warm with sunshine & highs in the 70s.

A strong cold front will pass later Sunday evening/Sunday night with some scattered showers & storms.

A few strong/damaging gusts cannot be ruled out from a few of the showers/storms due to the strength of the cold front & strong winds aloft.

nam_ref_042s

Winds will pick up Sunday night & will continue in a gusty fashion through Monday.

Winds could gust to 35 mph Sunday night & 40 mph on Monday from the west-northwest & northwest.

As the cold air arrives & high pressure settles in, patchy frost will be possible north of Lafayette Tuesday night-early Wednesday morning.

Scattered Showers/T’Storms Approaching……….

September 26th, 2009 at 4:31 pm by Chad Evans under Chad's WLFI Weather Blog

Cold core upper low is approaching with scattered showers & t’storms.

A severe t’storm watch is in effect for southern Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky & southeast Missouri until 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

As for us, scattered showers & t’storms will arrive this afternoon & evening as the activity moves northeast.  A few may produce some hail &/or a strong wind gust or two.

It appears the real core of the severe threat will be south of I-70, however.

The scattered showers & t’storms will tend to diminish & move off to the east & northeast by later this evening.

Weekend Outlook………..

September 25th, 2009 at 4:26 pm by Chad Evans under Chad's WLFI Weather Blog

Showery Tonight with an Isolated T’Storm or Two………..however, the rain will taper with time & patchy fog will develop.

Temperatures will be cool for football at 58-64 & a low overnight of 55-58.

Clouds & sunshine for Saturday…………..

Best coverage of scattered showers/t’storms Saturday would be 12 p.m.-6 p.m.  A few hail- &/or gusty wind producing t’storms will be possible given the magnitude of the cold air aloft.

After that, they should begin to diminish in coverage & move eastward.

However, still take an umbrella to the Purdue/Notre Dame football game, as there will be a few showers lingering around.

Highs will be near 75 for tailgating in the afternoon………..temperatures will fall into the mid 60s with any passing rain/storm………
